What is Bipolar Disorder in Adolescents?
Bipolar disorder in adolescents, also known as childhood-onset bipolar disorder, is a psychiatric illness characterized by extreme shifts in mood, including bipolar mania, episodes of depression, and periods of normal mood in between. Symptoms of mania, such as an inflated sense of self and reckless behavior including risky activities like reckless driving, may emerge alongside feelings of depressed mood and bipolar depression during depressive phases. These abnormal mood swings, or bipolar mood swings, can disrupt daily routines, academic performance, activity levels, social interactions, and family relationships, making early identification of symptoms critical.
