What Is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes big changes in mood, energy, and behavior. These changes can be so strong that they affect daily life. Teens with bipolar disorder may feel very happy and excited during manic episodes, or very sad and tired during depressive episodes. Some teens may also experience hypomanic episodes, which are less intense but still hard to manage.
There are different types of bipolar disorder, including:
- Bipolar I: includes full-blown manic episodes and sometimes depressive symptoms
- Bipolar II: involves hypomanic symptoms and longer periods of depression
- Cyclothymic disorder: a milder form of bipolar disorder with many ups and downs
